Leads can be generated for a variety of purposes; for example: list building, e-newsletter list acquisition or for winning customers.

Service industries A presence on the Internet, along with effective search engine optimization, is utilized by many companies in service industries to generate leads. Companies also heavily rely on referrals, telemarketers, and advertisements to generate leads. Healthcare and Nonprofits have specifically recognized online lead generation as a good method for not only reaching out to their existing database but also to engage with potential donors and supporters.

There are several free methods of generation leads using the Internet:

  • Search engine optimization is an effective method to increase the amount of "organic" leads from web searches.
  • Creating a viral video, image, infographic or Internet meme
  • Using social networking to promote one's product or service

1. Online Lead Generation

Online lead generation is an Internet marketing term that refers to the generation of prospective consumer interest or inquiry into a business' products or services through the Internet. A lead usually is the contact information and in some cases, demographic information of a customer who is interested in a specific product or service.

Online advertising
There are three main pricing models in the online advertising market that marketers can use to buy advertising and generate leads:

  • Cost per thousand pricing models charge advertisers for impressions - i.e. the number of times people view an advertisement.
  • Cost per click advertising overcomes this problem by charging advertisers only when the consumer clicks on the advertisement.
  • Cost per action advertising addresses the risk of CPM and CPC advertising by charging only by the lead.

2. Sales Leads

A sales lead is the identification of a person or entity that has the interest and authority to purchase a product or service. Sales leads come from either lead generation companies processes such as trade shows, direct marketing, advertising, Internet marketing, spam, gimmicks, or from sales person prospecting activities such as cold calling or making a connection through a social network.

Sales leads are generated on the basis of demographic criteria such as FICO score, income, age, HHI, etc. These leads are resold to multiple advertisers. Sales leads are typically followed up through phone calls by the sales force. Sales leads are commonly found in the mortgage, insurance and finance leads.

Marketing leads are brand-specific leads generated for a unique advertiser offer. In direct contrast to sales leads, marketing leads are sold only once. Because transparency is a necessary requisite for generating marketing leads, marketing lead campaigns can be optimized by mapping leads to their sources.
